HSH currently employs 150 people across its various divisions and we are proud of our ongoing commitment to on-the-job training and skills development. HSH has successfully trained 36 bricklayers, carpenters and plumbers over the past 5 years and 1 quantity surveyors, all from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
The HSH Training Centre was recently opened with the aim of ensuring a steady supply of quality artisans to our business in particular and the Northern Cape Province in general.
HSH's executive management team has more than 150 combined years' experience in the construction industry and HSH boasts a diverse range of in-house construction skills ranging from civil engineering, project management, quantity surveying, site managers and artisans:
Herman Pretorius (Managing Director) - Herman holds a National Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering, a construction management certificate from the University of Stellenbosch, is a registered professional construction manager and has more than 30 years' experience in the construction industry. Herman spent the first 20 years of his career at LTA Building NC & FS Limited, starting as a student and working his way through the ranks (site agent, contracts manager and quality control manager) to eventually a member of the board of directors as regional contracts director.
Herman served as the president of the Northern Cape Master Builders& Allied Trade Association from 2008 to 2010 and is a current board member of the Northern Cape Construction bargaining council.
Johan Buys (Financial Director) - Johan is a qualified chartered accountant (SA). After having spent five years in general accounting practice he joined PricewaterhouseCoopers' assurance division during 2001 as audit manager for various public and private companies. He was promoted to senior manager in 2003 and in 2004 he transferred to the corporate finance division. Johan headed the corporate finance division of PricewaterhouseCoopers in the central South African region until June 2008, specialising in transactional services. Johan also served as a member of PricewaterhouseCoopers' national committee on private company advisory services.
Willem Meintjies (Chief Quantity Surveyor) - Willem holds a National Higher Diploma in Quantity Surveying, is a member of the South African Council for Quantity Surveying Professionals and has 17 years' experience in the construction industry.
Hendrik Damons, Gert Snyders and Dawid Vaarland (Site Agents) – Hendrik, Gert and Dawid are qualified artisans with a combined 86 years' experience in the construction industry of which 47 years in on-site supervisory and management duties.
Stephan Thompson; Kobus Kock and Jannie Bothma – highly experienced construction managers with combined experience of more than 60 years.

Risk management remains a core driver within HSH and the company's systems are focused on identifying risks within both the organisation and individual projects and mitigating against these. The company is committed to best practice risk management methodologies and this strategy filters through all processes and procedures.
Systems benchmarked against industry best practice are used and highly skilled and experienced people are tasked with building detailed project plans prior to project commencement. HSH has a strong ethos of partnering with customers and other stakeholders during this process to ensure the timeous resourcing of projects with people, material and equipment. This strategy facilitates quality project delivery, safely, on time and within budget. We utilise up to date estimating, accounting and project control software.
